We are Still here after 92 years
Nestled in the heart of our community, The Rock Store is more than just a place of business—it's a cornerstone of local history, resilience, and innovation. The story of The Rock Store begins in 1932, during the challenging days of the Great Depression. At a time when the nation was grappling with economic hardship, a man named James Langton envisioned creating something lasting, something that would serve the community for generations to come.
James Langton’s vision took form in a building constructed from the natural stone and petrified wood found in the surrounding area. These materials, rich with the history of the land itself, were chosen not only for their durability but also for their connection to the earth. The store's rugged exterior, with its distinctive stone and wood façade, quickly became a recognizable and cherished landmark.
From the outset, The Rock Store was more than a simple retail establishment. It was a place where locals could gather, share stories, and support one another through tough times. The store was equipped with meat lockers for storing game, a crucial service in an era when hunting was both a necessity and a way of life for many families. The butcher shop provided fresh cuts of meat, making The Rock Store a vital resource for the community.
As the decades passed, The Rock Store witnessed the ebb and flow of change. Families grew, industries evolved, and the world around it shifted, but the store remained a constant presence. In 1984, the store faced a pivotal moment when Don and Julie Sweet took over the reins. This was just after the great flooding, a natural disaster that tested the resilience of the entire community. Despite the challenges, Don and Julie persevered, bringing new energy and ideas to The Rock Store.
For nearly 16 years, Don and Julie Sweet ran a thriving business. Under their leadership, The Rock Store flourished, becoming not just a place to buy goods, but a gathering spot where relationships were forged, and memories were made. The Sweets’ tenure was marked by their deep commitment to the community, a commitment that would become a defining feature of the store.
In 1999, as Don and Julie prepared to pass the torch, they found the perfect successors in Jimmy and Janice Simpson. The Simpsons brought their own brand of dedication and innovation to The Rock Store. They recognized the importance of modernization and made significant upgrades, including the installation of new coolers. These improvements ensured that The Rock Store could continue to meet the needs of its customers, all while maintaining the charm and character that had made it a beloved institution.
The year 2017 marked another transformative chapter in The Rock Store’s history. Recognizing the growing demand for local dining options, the decision was made to add a full burger restaurant to the store. This addition expanded The Rock Store’s offerings and attracted a new generation of customers, eager to enjoy quality food in a familiar and welcoming environment. The burger restaurant quickly became a favorite, known for its delicious, hearty meals made with the freshest ingredients.
In 2022, the legacy of The Rock Store was entrusted to Sydney and Tyler Simpson. Building on the strong foundation laid by those who came before them, Sydney and Tyler embarked on an ambitious plan to further enhance and modernize the store. Their vision included the addition of new parking lots, which made access easier for the increasing number of visitors. New signage was introduced, reflecting both the store's rich history and its bright future.
The gas pumps, a practical necessity for many travelers, were upgraded to ensure efficiency and convenience. Meanwhile, the creation of a new outdoor patio with a tap house offered a fresh and inviting space for customers to relax and enjoy a drink. The addition of new bathrooms and expanded seating areas further improved the customer experience, making The Rock Store a destination in its own right.
Throughout all these changes, one thing has remained constant: The Rock Store’s deep connection to the community. It is a place where the past and present meet, where history is honored, and where innovation is embraced. We owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to James Langton for his foresight in building this store in 1932. His vision, coupled with the hard work and dedication of the families who have owned and operated The Rock Store over the years, has created a legacy that we are proud to carry forward.
As we look to the future, we are committed to preserving the unique character of The Rock Store while continuing to evolve and meet the needs of our customers. The story of The Rock Store is one of resilience, community, and progress—a story that we are honored to be a part of.
It All Started When Grandma Got Me Drunk...
No really it did! One fateful evening in 2019 in a cozy little food trailer, with the intoxicating aroma of burgers sizzling on the grill and the sweet taste of local cider. My grandma and I were serving up smiles, one burger at a time. But that night, inspiration struck, as did the cider’s delightful buzz. What if we flipped everything around—literally? Thus was born our now-famous "upside down burger," with inverted buns that let you taste the buttery crispness first, turning your culinary world upside down just like it did mine.
The idea was a hit. Customers couldn’t get enough of our quirky creation. Encouraged by this success, in early 2020, we went full throttle with our upside-down burgers, and the response was explosive. What started in the back of my parents' business soon grew into something so much bigger.
By 2022, alongside my incredible partner and now wife, we took over the reins and began a whirlwind of transformation. We expanded the premises, adding spacious parking lots, extra bathrooms, and an inviting outdoor patio perfect for sunny days. But we didn’t stop there. Our vision included a place where the community could gather not just for food, but for experiences. We introduced a tap house and became the go-to spot for live music events and concerts, turning our little burger joint into a cultural hub.
As we approach the end of the year, we’re thrilled to invite you to our latest adventure—a brand new tap house crafted from shipping containers, a testament to our commitment to innovation and community.
Join us on this wild ride. Support our newly designed online store, come by for a burger and a beer, and be part of a story that’s still being written, one upside-down burger at a time.
